MAN Diesel S.A. recommended Lubricating oils for S.E.M.T.Pielstick enginesOur Company recommends the use of lube oils that meet our reliability requirements for the whole range of S.E.M.T. Pielstick engines running on conventional fuels and gas, taking into consideration the different kind of applications (Genset production, emergency genset, propulsion and railway traction). For new engines range, lube oils must be compliant to the « CF » category of API classification. Our different lubricating oils lists have been completed upon a formal approval process which includes two steps. First of all, we examine the different laboratory tests of the candidate lube oil given by the lube oil company. The second step depends on the modifications brought to the new product:
Please take into consideration that lube oil suppliers undertakes whole responsibility for the quality and performances of their products to the exclusion of any liability of our company. You may acces our recommendations on line by type of engines or dowload the full PDF document MAN Diesel S.A. lube oil classification sheet for S.E.M.T. Pielstick enginesFor « high » and « medium-speed » Diesel engines, lube oil characteristics are closely linked to those of the fuel burnt.
Based on ISO standard classification of fuels No 8217, we have created 5 lube oil classes: “A” to “E”. For engines running on gas, there is a specific unique lube oil class, called “DF” (Dual Fuel). Charts here after gives the relationship between the fuel (petroleum products) and the lube oil class to be selected – see example given below the chart.
Note: in case of fuel not referenced to ISO 8217 standard, please refer to delivery bulletin or fuel specification contract and apply same method to select needed lube oil class.
Example of a residual fuel with following characteristics: Viscosity 168 mm2/s @50°C - Density 953 kg/m3 – CCR 6,8% - Ashes 0,01% - Sulphur 1,75%.
In present case, the most penalizing characteristic is viscosity (lowest in the chart). As a consequence, the right lube oil class, listed in the right column, is “E”. Practically, a “D” lube oil class is also well adapted for it is mainly linked to the BN of the lube oil, thus to the sulphur content of the fuel. Some doubt about the lube oil class ?
